Interstitial Lung Disease and Pulmonary Fibrosis Care in Las Vegas

Medically reviewed by Dr. Anisa Valina, DO ·

Interstitial lung disease, or ILD, is a group of conditions causing scarring and stiffness in the lungs. Pulmonary fibrosis is the most common form. Early diagnosis matters, because treatment works best before scarring advances.

Symptoms

  • Shortness of breath with activity, getting worse over time
  • A dry cough lasting weeks or months
  • Fatigue
  • Rounded, widened fingertips (clubbing)

Common Causes

  • Work exposures, including silica, asbestos, and beryllium
  • Autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma
  • Certain medications and radiation
  • Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, with no known cause

Former Nevada Test Site and energy workers with beryllium or silica exposure face higher risk. See our DEEOIC page.

Diagnosis

Pulmonary function testing with DLCO, done in our clinic, shows how well your lungs move air and transfer oxygen. Dr. Valina also orders a high-resolution CT scan and reviews your exposure history and medications.

Treatment

Depending on the type of ILD, your plan includes antifibrotic or anti-inflammatory medications when appropriate, oxygen evaluation, pulmonary rehab referrals, and regular PFT checks to track your lungs over time.
