Electrolyte Disorders in Las Vegas, NV
Electrolyte abnormalities sit at the intersection of medications, kidney function, hormones, hydration, and diet. They're often noticed on a routine blood test and then either over-treated with a supplement that doesn't address the cause, or under-investigated until they recur. Our nephrologists work the problem from the underlying cause, not the lab value alone.
Common patterns we evaluate
Persistently low potassium can point to specific medications, occult vomiting or diarrhea, primary aldosteronism, or distal tubular problems. Persistently low sodium ranges from medication effect and heart failure to inappropriate ADH secretion. Abnormal calcium and magnesium often reflect parathyroid problems, vitamin D metabolism, or specific kidney conditions. Persistent metabolic acidosis or alkalosis tells its own story.
What an evaluation looks like
We review the full medication list (diuretics, ACE inhibitors and ARBs, laxatives, supplements, herbal preparations), confirm the lab findings, and order the focused workup that matches the suspected cause. Treatment usually involves modifying the offending input (medication adjustment, dietary change) and, when appropriate, replacing what's deficient or treating an underlying hormonal cause.
Coordinated care
Patients with recurrent electrolyte problems often benefit from coordination with internal medicine, particularly when multiple medications across multiple prescribers contribute. We can manage that coordination internally.
